👥 Team and Origin

USDS is the upgraded stablecoin of Sky Protocol, which is the rebranded successor to MakerDAO — one of the oldest, most battle-tested protocols in DeFi. MakerDAO was founded in 2017 by Rune Christensen and rebranded to Sky in August 2024. Sky Protocol generated approximately $124 million in Q1 2026 revenue.

⚙️ Technology and Use Case

USDS is an overcollateralised decentralised stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. Users can deposit USDS into the Sky Savings Rate (SSR) to earn variable yield of approximately 3.75-4.5% APY in early 2026 — a passive income feature not available in USDT or USDC. Total USDS supply sits above $11 billion in 2026.

📊 Tokenomics and Market Cap

USDS maintains a $1.00 peg and has no upside price potential. The Sky Savings Rate passes through real economic yield from US Treasury bills and RWA strategies, not inflationary token rewards.

🏆 Competition and Market Position

USDS is the most credible large-scale decentralised stablecoin, building on DAI's nearly decade-long track record. sUSDS (yield-bearing wrapper) has become a default treasury allocation for institutional DeFi participants.

🚩 Red Flags and Risks

USDS carries smart contract risk. Unlike USDC, USDS has no monthly Deloitte audit. A major DeFi exploit in April 2026 caused a 9.76% TVL drop in Sky Protocol, demonstrating sector-wide contagion risk. Yield features are restricted for users in the US, UK, and some jurisdictions.

🟢 Bull case

USDS supply grows toward the projected $20 billion as the Sky Savings Rate attracts yield-seeking capital, DeFi activity on Ethereum recovers, and institutional treasury teams adopt sUSDS as a standard cash management tool.

🔴 Bear case

A governance failure or smart contract exploit in the Sky Protocol, DeFi-wide contagion from a major hack damages confidence, or the Sky Savings Rate drops significantly as interest rates fall.

🔄 What would change our view?

We would become more positive if: USDS achieves a full independent audit comparable to USDC's Deloitte attestations, or institutional adoption accelerates materially. We would become more cautious if: another significant DeFi exploit occurs within the Sky ecosystem, or the collateral quality deteriorates.

Overall verdict

USDS is the most sophisticated decentralised stablecoin available, offering passive USD yield through the Sky Savings Rate. Significantly more interesting than USDT or USDC for active DeFi participants. However, it carries smart contract and governance risk that centralised alternatives do not. Irish users should verify that yield features are accessible in their jurisdiction.

1/10Upside/Risk

Yield restriction note: The Sky Savings Rate and Sky Token Rewards are restricted for users in the US, UK, and some other jurisdictions. Irish users should verify current access availability at sky.money before using USDS yield features.
